In Scotland, they have a concept of “wild camp” which essentially means that you can go off the beaten track and pitch your tent pretty much anywhere that if safe to do so (officially as part of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, you can camp free of charge on most unenclosed land.

They have a couple of rules to keep everyone and the countryside safe, but it all follows a simple policy of ‘leave-no-trace’.

If you want to do the same thing in the UK, there is pretty much only one place you can do it … the Dartmoor National Park, where you can set yourself up for wild camping for a maximum of two nights.
